HOMEOWNER MAINTENANCE
Arizona Landscape Lighting Maintenance: A Seasonal Checklist
Heat, dust, irrigation, plant growth, and monsoon weather slowly change a lighting system. A short seasonal review keeps the original design intact.

The short answer
Inspect your system at least twice a year and after major weather. Clean lenses, straighten shifted fixtures, trim plant material away from beams, check exposed wire, confirm schedules, and look for moisture or corrosion. Turn off power before touching wiring or opening equipment.
The homeowner checklist
Clean lenses and fixture faces
Dust, mineral deposits, irrigation overspray, and landscape debris reduce output and soften beam edges. Use a gentle method recommended for the fixture material; abrasive cleaners can damage finishes and glass.
Check aim and alignment
Foot traffic, yard work, animals, soil movement, and irrigation repairs can shift stake-mounted lights. Evaluate the system after dark and aim fixtures away from windows, seating positions, and direct sightlines.
Manage plant growth
A fixture aimed at a young tree may disappear inside foliage months later. Trim around the beam path and reassess the aim as trunks, canopies, palms, and shrubs mature.
Look for wire exposure
Erosion and landscaping can bring buried cable to the surface. Do not leave damaged or exposed connections unattended. Mark the location and have a qualified professional inspect the run.
Review the transformer and controls
Confirm that schedules still match sunset and your routine. Check for unusual sounds, heat, tripped protection, insects, damaged covers, or moisture. Keep the area around the transformer accessible.
After monsoon weather
Walk the property in daylight first. Look for displaced fixtures, fallen branches, washed-out soil, standing water, loose bistro hardware, and exposed cable. Test the system only when conditions are safe and dry enough to do so.
When to call for service
Repeated outages, flickering, multiple dim fixtures, visible wire damage, burning odors, a transformer that trips, or water inside a fixture deserve professional attention. A focused repair can often restore the design without replacing the entire system.
